When you first start using essential oils, it is a bit of a trial and error process to figure out what you like best and what works for you. You may find a few that are your favorites, or you may still be looking for the perfect blend for your home. Whether you are still looking for that perfect blend or you just want to try something new, here are a few things you can try.
Focus on Scent Groups
One easy way to start your essential oil blends is to separate them into scent groups. There are floral scents, like lavender, geranium, jasmine, and rose. Orange, lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot are examples of citrus scents. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and pepper are considered spicy aromas. Woody aromas include the rustic scents of cedarwood, patchouli, and sandalwood. You also have the green scent group, made up of peppermint, chamomile, eucalyptus, and rosemary. Try blending different oils from similar scent groups together or choosing one from two different scent groups. This may take a little trial and error, but that is half the fun.
Start Small
When you first start blending, make sure you start small. You don’t want to use a lot of your oil just to find out that you don’t like a combination. Start with some base oils that you really like and combine a little at a time. Combine a few drops of each oil and use that combination for a little bit. If you are using diffuser jewelry, make sure you wait until the previous oil is completely gone before applying your blend to your insert or lava stone so you can appreciate the new combination.
Get Inspiration from Others
One of the best ways to find a great blend is to get inspiration from other people who love essential oils. Your distributor or upline probably has some recommended blends you can use, or you can turn to the internet & social media. There is plenty of information online about different essential oil products and combining them. You can also find tips for using your blends for maximum benefit.
Pay Attention
Make sure you read the labels on the bottles before you start any mixing. If you are going to use your blend topically, you need to note if you’ll need to dilute your blend before use. There are also some oils that you shouldn’t use if you are pregnant or nursing. When in doubt, read the label.
Creating the perfect blend and experimenting to find new scents can always be fun, provided you do it safely. You can’t really make a huge mistake, so don’t be afraid to combine something, even if it doesn’t seem like something that you normally find. Your creativity could really pay off!
